Typesetting review: Yuru Yuri♪♪

Yuru Yuri S2 typesetting review

Grades

Asuka-subs

Why did I even waste time downloading this.

Commie

(me)

Yep.

Mocha could be better. The font for “Bowling Tournament” too.

The white border is a bit too dark.

Yep.

Fonts could be better. The color is off too.

“Witch Girl” is too dark.

More blur/less \fax.

Should be darker.

Border should be darker and it should have more blur.

The Mocha could be better.

Yep.

FFF

Should be blurrier.

Color for “Witch Girl Mirakurun” is way wrong.

Should be able to see “Bowling Tournament” at the bottom here.

The Mocha and font choice is even worse than mine.

Why does the top part have too little blur and the bottom have too much? I am confused.

Border is too dark and too thick.

Starts a few frames late.

The Mocha is awful. The font could be better and the color is wrong.

Wow, thanks for typesetting Mirakurun again (and doing an awful job.) You missed two signs, though. The border on “Sold Out” should be darker.

Darker/more blur.

Oh yeah?

I just don’t get why there’s not more blur and the border isn’t thicker!

Color is not even close.

Awful Mocha.

Needs more blur and some \fax.

Bad Mocha, color is off.

Font should be thicker.

SHiN-gx

That looks strangely familiar.

Are you even trying?

Should be another layer so you can blur the font.

I have no idea why these are below it when they could be above and the dialogue wouldn’t have to be at the top, but okay.

You probably want to use Mocha for stuff like this.

Yeah, no. Use two layers. And Mocha.

lol. The rest of these signs are all like this, btw.

Same font and editing as mine? I don’t think this is a coincidence. Especially since what I changed this to isn’t even correct, really.

A for effort. Oh wait.

Two layers? What’s that?

Sweet colors bro.

Same editing again…

Should be two layers. Also, sweet encoding.

Tonde

Hardsubbed.

Grades

Asuka-subs: F. Every sign is mistimed. Not sorted by time.

Commie: B. Fonts for a few signs could be better. Mocha is somewhat bad, but not as bad as the rest.

FFF: C. Could be improved a lot just by doing the Mocha signs correctly (for VSFilter, that is).

SHiN-gx: F. If you’re gonna copy my editing/typesetting, you might as well do it exactly instead of fucking it up. The rest is shit too. Not sorted by time. Wrong script resolution too.

Tonde: H.

  1. No, no, I can’t overlook this. We copied you/Crunchyroll? You just insulted four honest and hardworking people in group. Same fonts and typesetting? Did you see how the tags were made? How are they similar to yours? We use dafont.com for the fonts, great. We don’t steal subtitles from Crunchyroll like you. Don’t ever fucking compare us to your kind.

    • No, I mean, you copied me specifically. You edited the joke that CR didn’t in exactly the same (incorrect) way I did. I can’t believe this is a coincidence. Why would you make the same error I did? And yeah, the fonts you used are exactly the same and the same color too. It doesn’t matter, though, because your typesetting is still shit. Also like 95% of the lines are exactly the same or incredibly close to what CR has. There’s no way you aren’t using their TL as a base.

      • There you go again with accusing us of using CR as a base. We didn’t even look at CR at all. I get my raws after HorribleSubs releases the episodes, yes, but I haven’t downloaded a single one.

Also, if we were like you and just edited CR and added typesetting, I’m fairly sure we would release sooner with the same or better quality. So you’re nothing special.

      • Because it’s ridiculous that you keep denying it. I don’t even know what your problem with using CR is anyway. They’re clearly better translators than you’ll ever be.

  2. Hello there. This is the TL in charge of Yuru Yuri at SHiN-gx. After reading your comment about us copying your release, I would like to debunk that lie completely.

First of all, to say that we copied your edits implies that we also used CR as the base script. I will inform you that that is not true in the slightest. I’ve spent several late nights (sometimes up to 5:00 AM due to timezone differences among members) translating MY OWN scripts, by MYSELF. For you to insult me with that kind of comment is laughable because edits are honestly, not too hard to accomplish. You don’t need a fucking Master’s degree in English literature to make good edits on an anime script.

Secondly, even if we had used CR, then I can assure you that we wouldn’t flatter you by copying your edits; they are 100% our work.

Thirdly, you claim that we copied your typesetting, which couldn’t be farther from the truth, Currently, the one in charge of our typesetting puts a lot of hard work into it, even though he is not an expert by any stretch of the word. He tries his hardest and takes pride in not copying anyone. Finally, let’s say for the sake of argument that we did copy your typesetting. Would you own up to being the creator of the textbox-like signs that we had been using for the first few episodes? Yea, I didn’t think so.

So before you make baseless accusations, use your minuscule brain first, please.

tl;dr: Oh, you wanted to be a lazy fuck who doesn’t like to read why he isn’t right? Sorry.

    • So I’m supposed to believe that it’s a coincidence that the TL for almost every single sign in this review is the same as every other group (who used CR)? If you really want me to, I can go through the script and copy and paste lines from CR and your release, but I think these 20 or so pictures should be enough.

  3. I can assure you that not all of our signs are identical. That being said, why the fuck would we cherry pick our signs to copy, while doing some ourselves? Oh, maybe to cover up the fact that we’re even copying in the first place, right?

    Wrong.

If we were going to expressly copy even one sign on purpose, we would go all the way through. There’s no sense in doing something half-baked. Whether it be copying or doing something yourself.

    • Yes they are obviously not all identical. I fucking reviewed them. When did I ever imply that? I have no idea why you partly copied my signs.

  4. A thief accusing someone being a thief.

    >I don’t even know what your problem with using CR is anyway.
Do you even “fan”sub? I guess not. Hello to the future of “fan”subbing.

    • Yes, I am a fan and I sub anime. It doesn’t matter who the translator is because translating anime is not my job. I don’t know Japanese. I just do the other parts.

      • Well then I’d appreciate it if you didn’t accuse me of using CR. If you don’t think that our translation is as good as theirs, that’s fine, but just chocking it up to “Oh ya, they must have copied,” is ignorant on your part.

And I never understood the argument of “If you didn’t do something in the first place, why are you even arguing about it?”
I couldn’t care less if you think we copied and kept that opinion to yourself, but I’m not really a fan of you making other people believe that.

Anyway, thanks for your time. I’m done.

        • Why would I lie and say your translation doesn’t look exactly like CR’s? I have absolutely no problem with you using CR, nor do I have a problem with you copying my editing or typesetting. I just think it’s a stupid thing to do. Feel free to continue if you wish.

  5. >Thinks that someone using the same font is copying
Ha. I chuckled. I’d have picked kraash, too. We probably even got it in the same place.

    >Publically attacking other people’s releases/typesetting in a review, and including your own
You uhh, don’t do this. Don’t review your own releases. Peer Review > Advertising > * > Self Review, always.

    >エロトク (Ero Toku) translated as “Talk Dirty” being the same editing, and complaining
Dude, there is only one way to translate this, unless you want to pull a 4kids and say “HEY GUYS LET’S TALK LIKE DUCKS AND WALLOW IN FILTH”. Which would be funnier, but not very accurate.

    >SHiN’s script resolution is off
Script resolution is because of an “interesting” little thing SHiN likes to do in Aegisub (Which he’ll stop now, I hope…)

This whole thing reeks of immature and “DeviantART” syndrome (read: ORIGINAL CONTENT DO NOT STEAL, or in plain english: “I’m convinced you stole just because you did sorta good and had the same fonts on a few signs”)

    • Oh and
      >Not sorted by time
Since when did signs have to be sorted by time? you’re just wasting cpu if they’re not in time-order the entire way through. besides, nobody but you and the sub group is going to look in there, either.

      • It can cause bugs in VSFilter with blur and multiple layers. I guess this doesn’t affect most people though, since they’re not even good enough to use multiple layers when typesetting. But it literally takes like 5 seconds to do, so there’s no excuse.

    • >Ha. I chuckled. I’d have picked kraash, too. We probably even got it in the same place.

More like their other font choices were completely awful so it’s surprising when they have a good font choice and it’s literally the exact same font.

      >Publically attacking other people’s releases/typesetting in a review, and including your own

Sorry, but no one else even reviews typesetting, and I typeset a bunch of shows a season, so I’m not just going to not review those shows.

      >エロトク (Ero Toku) translated as “Talk Dirty” being the same editing, and complaining

Did you not see what the other groups did?

      >SHiN’s script resolution is off

It’s a retarded thing to do regardless of the reason.

      >This whole thing reeks of immature and “DeviantART” syndrome (read: ORIGINAL CONTENT DO NOT STEAL, or in plain english: “I’m convinced you stole just because you did sorta good and had the same fonts on a few signs”)

No, I’m convinced they did because some signs are literally the same, and a shitload of lines are edited exactly the same. There are literally like 10 lines in a row that are exactly the same. Some of the jokes are edited in the same way. Certain phrases are translated exactly the same. Not to mention, if they didn’t copy from me, then they’re admitting their translator is an idiot and doesn’t know Japanese because the whole “talk archaically” this is completely wrong. Oh, and 魔女っ娘 is clearly “Witch Girl”.

      • Dark_Sage reviews TSing in his reviews, too.
When you review something, you’re expected to be a third party in relation to what you review, so it kinda smells of self-advertising when i see it done, and often results in unintentional bias.
Just because you worked on a show does not means you are required to review your release, too.

Also, if I had one of my staff members picking out errors after they worked on it and gave it to me to release, I’d wonder why the hell they didn’t give me a v2 script for it at the same time.
I’ve been fansubbing for over 3 years, and this is common, but drama still makes my head hurt. If you review, do it fairly and without bias or assumption, but be thorough. We like thorough.

Oh, and the English title of the Mirakurun anime is actually officially “Magical Girl Mirakurun”, lol (Sources: CR, Wikipedia, Several Figure Shops), and they’ve used it before in their episodes, so they did it for consistency. 魔女っ娘 quite literally means witch girl, but it seems to have changed with Madoka, so /shrug.

And remember that SHiN-gx’s release has 2 scripts in it; the default is the Americanized one, while the alt is the more literal translation (complete with honorifics), so take a look at that too.

        • >Dark_Sage reviews TSing in his reviews, too.

That’s pretty much why I started doing these. Because he reviewed TSing and he literally knows jackshit about it.

          >When you review something, you’re expected to be a third party in relation to what you review, so it kinda smells of self-advertising when i see it done, and often results in unintentional bias.

Feel free to point out any review I’ve done where my release doesn’t deserve the grade it got.

          >Just because you worked on a show does not means you are required to review your release, too.

Why would I ignore the (often) best release? That would kind of be pointless, since people are coming here to see which groups have the best typesetting, I presume.

          >Also, if I had one of my staff members picking out errors after they worked on it and gave it to me to release, I’d wonder why the hell they didn’t give me a v2 script for it at the same time.

I have no idea what this means.

          >I’ve been fansubbing for over 3 years, and this is common, but drama still makes my head hurt. If you review, do it fairly and without bias or assumption, but be thorough. We like thorough.

          I am.

Is that why CR has Witch Girl Mirakurun? Also, nothing else is even remotely official (though if you could find me something on the official Yuru Yuri site, I might listen).

          >And remember that SHiN-gx’s release has 2 scripts in it; the default is the Americanized one, while the alt is the more literal translation (complete with honorifics), so take a look at that too.

What does that have to do with anything?

  6. >Because he reviewed TSing and he literally knows jackshit about it.
Agreed, but i mentioned him for the sake of it.

    >Feel free to point out any review I’ve done where my release doesn’t deserve the grade it got.
Just a comment, not an accusation.

    >I am.
    Good.

    >I have no idea what this means.
    A v2 is a release with error-fixes.

    >Is that why CR has Witch Girl Mirakurun? Also, nothing else is even remotely official (though if you could find me something on the official Yuru Yuri site, I might listen).
Meh, I was going off of all of their news posts, not their actual releases. Also the official site is in japanese and doesn’t seem like it’s getting translated soon. I went from general consensus, and “official” (with quotes) might have been more appropriate. Also, I did just check Wikipedia first.

    >What does that have to do with anything?
There are two versions of the script in the same file.

    • >Just a comment, not an accusation.

A pointless one, then. By the way, please don’t murder anyone today.

      >A v2 is a release with error-fixes.

No, I mean, what does that have to do with my reviews?

      >Meh, I was going off of all of their news posts, not their actual releases.

Do some research next time before you say shit that will make you look retarded.

      >Also the official site is in japanese and doesn’t seem like it’s getting translated soon.

That’s kind of my point. There’s no real official translation, but CR comes pretty close because often the studio/licensor tell them how to translate certain key terms.

      >I went from general consensus,

Which is “Witch Girl”, seeing as most people watch the subs that use that.

      >and “official” (with quotes) might have been more appropriate.

      Again, that would be CR.

      >Also, I did just check Wikipedia first.

Wikipedia is wrong surprisingly often. I’m convinced most of the people who translate stuff from the Japanese articles don’t actually know Japanese and just kind of throw it together from various translations.

      >There are two versions of the script in the same file.

They both have the same typesetting, though.

      • > No, I mean, what does that have to do with my reviews?
You pointed in your review that you’ve made an error. He’s basically asking, why you didn’t pass the correction to the error to the commie release manager (or whoever puts the whole thing together) at the same time, if not sooner so that he could release a fixed v2. If you did however, that’s another situation then…

Nice review though, had I known about it sooner, I’d have probably watched commie instead of FFF.

        • >He’s basically asking, why you didn’t pass the correction to the error to the commie release manager

          lol, no such position exists

          > (or whoever puts the whole thing together)

That would be me, since I did everything for Yuru Yuri (even encoding for a few episodes).

          > so that he could release a fixed v2

Well, no v2 would be done before a batch at the end, and even if there was a v2 to be done, I would be the one doing all the work.

          >Nice review though, had I known about it sooner, I’d have probably watched commie instead of FFF.

Yeah, well, I hope you liked CR, and by extension FFF, ignoring a ton of jokes because they’re too lazy to translate them. At least I tried 😦

  7. > That would be me, since I did everything for Yuru Yuri (even encoding for a few episodes).
    Whoa, that’s rather impressive.

    > Yeah, well, I hope you liked CR, and by extension FFF, ignoring a ton of jokes because they’re too lazy to translate them. At least I tried
Well, IMHO they weren’t that bad (though not overly good either, *cough* nowhere near UTW quality *cough*) and as I know a tiny little bit of Japanese myself, more got into to my brain than what was translated 😉

On a partly unrelated note — are you doing more work on Commie? I’ve been watching more and more releases by them lately (like Natsume or Oda Nobuna) and the quality was IMHO rather high. The only thing I miss in them is karaoke, lol… Anyway, thanks again for the post and work you’re doing for commie. I definitely won’t miss your next review. 🙂

    • You can see all the work I did this season here http://commiesubs.com/shows/ at least until it’s updated for next season.

      >Well, IMHO they weren’t that bad (though not overly good either, *cough* nowhere near UTW quality *cough*) and as I know a tiny little bit of Japanese myself, more got into to my brain than what was translated

I don’t think UTW is the gold standard (especially for the show none of them want to work on like Accel World), rather CR is on the shows they care about. They did quite a good job on this show other than the jokes they ignored (which is kind of important for a comedy show).

      >On a partly unrelated note — are you doing more work on Commie?

Well, I worked on 7 shows this season, so you can probably figure out from that.

You know you want to comment.
