Script Review: [HorribleSubs] Saint Seiya Omega – 01

The art style reminds me a lot of Casshern Sins. This show makes about as much sense as Casshern, too.

Friendship is magic.

r/a/ge level: 30/100. There’s no translation for the OP or ED. It’s Crunchyroll! Oh no! At least honorifics have been left in.

No comma.

“Could” should be emphasized to match how the line is supposed to be read. This is a recurring thing. Lots of sub groups don’t take advantage of this simple change that could so drastically improve many lines.

No commas.

I don’t know why Crunchyroll is so reluctant to use fairly common contractions. This isn’t the first time either – one of the problems of being a non-native English speaker (or an idiot if he or she is native). Anyway, the protagonist isn’t exactly Aristotle, so having his speech be a little rough would be nice.

“Someone should teach him/that boy some manners” or “That boy needs to learn some manners.”

“I think” is redundant and reduces the flow of the line. It isn’t always needed, especially when the person is using a fairly common phrase. Even though I’m complaining about this, I think [teehee] the quick banter between the manservant and the protagonist was the highlight of the show.

Okay, I thought I’d let this slide the first couple of times, but it’s really starting to bother me now. Kohga has yet to become a Saint, so “be” should be “become.”

“I don’t want to become a Saint!” better fits the situation and context, even if the translation may be a little off.

I’m not sure why the attack names are all italicized.

What I liked:

Everything made sense. Other than the few lines that bothered me, there was nothing negative that stuck in my mind over the positive. Like usual, if you want speed and solid quality, Crunchyroll/HorribleSubs isn’t a bad choice.

What I didn’t like:

While relatively minor, there were a lot of grammatical mistakes. The lack of contractions in some lines made the script horribly stiff at times. The characters didn’t really stand out from each other either. Everything was pretty generic, but solid all around. No notable lines. I would’ve preferred words like unleash, ignite, and/or combust when talking about the Cosmo, but whatever, there might be a reason for that.

Overall Grade: 3 galactic fist-bumps… out of 5.
